Lessons from Geese

Lessons from Geese

Leadership Lessons from Geese

Lessons from Geese

> As each bird flaps its wings, it creates an “uplift" for the bird following. By flying in a "V" formation, the whole flock increases the flying range by over 70% compared to a bird flying alone.
Lesson: People who share a common direction and sense of community can get where they are going quicker and easier because they are travelling on the thrust of one another.
> Whenever a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of trying to fly alone, and quickly gets back into formation to take advantage of the "lifting power" of the bird immediately in front.
Lesson: If we have as much sense as a goose, we will stay in formation with those who are headed where we want to go (and be willing to accept their help as well as give ours to the others).
> When the lead goose gets tired, it rotates back into the formation and another flies at the point position.
Lesson: It pays to take turns doing the hard tasks, and sharing leadership - with people, as with geese, we are interdependent on each other.
> The geese in formation honk from behind to encourage those up front to keep up their speed.
Lesson: We need to make sure our honking from behind is encouraging - and not something else.
> When a goose gets sick or wounded or shot down, two geese drop out of formation and follow it down to help and protect it. They stay until it is able to fly again or dies. Then they launch out on their own, with another formation, or catch up with the flock.
Lesson: If we have as much sense as geese we too will stand by each other in difficult times as well as when we are strongest.

"LESSONS FROM GEESE" was transcribed from a speech given by Angeles Arrien at the 1991 Organisational Development Network in the USA and was based on the work of Milton Olson.

NEW - Paradigm Shift

NEW - Paradigm Shift

When organisations think creatively, they gain a competitive advantage

Teambuilding Australia delivers a short and punchy, fun session that imparts the benefits of smashing existing limited beliefs (paradigms) and powerfully explores the possibilities of "in a world where every- thing is possible, how does your company achieve ultimate success".

The outcomes never cease to amaze. Quite often the main barriers to an organisation reaching peak performance are not external, but internal. Market and competitor activity is usually uncontrollable, however if you want to be a market leader and pace-setter you need to think outside the square.

Perfect for teams looking to explore new solutions, over a 1 - 2 hour sessions teams learn about breaking paradigms and seek out new approaches.

"We've received fantastic feedback from attendees and just wanted to say a big thanks for you and your team's enthusiasm, energy and creativity on the day (and all of the work leading up to it)." McKINSEY CONSULTING

Team Workshops

Team Workshops

Team building is the process of building a good team - ie: one that performs well together.

looking at relationships in the team, or embarking on other forms of team building, you need to put this foundation of shared commitment in place by:
0. Clarifying the team goals
0. Building ownership and commitment to those goals across the team
0. Identifying any issues which inhibit the team from reaching their goals
0. Addressing those issues, removing the inhibitors and thereby enabling the goals to be achieved
Team Building is therefore not just a single event (though events can play a part), nor is it something that can be done by someone outside the team (though outside consultants can help). It is a task primarily for the team manager and the team members themselves.

WHO MOVED MY CHEESE?

WHO MOVED MY CHEESE?

'Who Moved My Cheese? An Amazing Way to Deal with Change in Your Work and in Your Life'

With Who Moved My Cheese? Dr. Spencer Johnson realizes the need for finding the language and tools to deal with change--an issue that makes all of us nervous and uncomfortable.
Most people are fearful of change because they don't believe they have any control over how or when it happens to them. Since change happens either to the individual or by the individual, Spencer Johnson shows us that what matters most is the attitude we have about change.

Who Moved My Cheese? is the story of four characters living in a "Maze" who face unexpected change when they discover their "Cheese" has disappeared. Sniff and Scurry, who are mice, and Hem and Haw, little people the size of mice, each adapt to change in their "Maze" differently. In fact, one doesn't adapt at all...

This timeless allegory reveals profound truths to individuals and organizations dealing with change. We each live in a "Maze", a metaphor for the companies or organizations we work with, the communities we live in, the families we love places where we look for the things we want in life, "Cheese". It may be an enjoyable career, loving relationships, wealth, or spiritual peace of mind. With time and experience, one character eventually succeeds and even prospers from the change in his "Maze".In an effort to share what he has learned along the way, he records his personal discoveries on the maze walls, the "Handwriting on the Wall". Likewise, when we begin to see the "writing on the wall", we discover the simplicity and necessity of adapting to change.

Full of modern day insight, the story of Who Moved My Cheese? invites individuals and organizations to enjoy less stress and more success by learning to deal with the inevitable change.
